(This story is excerpted from my upcoming book, For the Love of Europe — collecting 100 of my favorite memories from a lifetime of European travel, coming out in July. We stopped there on our first visit to Ireland many years ago and thought it underwhelming given all of the hype that guidebooks give to the place.
